Initiating the Closure Request
- The guardian must visit the bank branch where the account is held.
- A written application for account closure must be submitted.
- The request should clearly mention the account details and reason for closure.
- The guardian must carry valid identity proof and a copy of the minor’s age proof.
- Some banks may offer pre-printed closure forms for convenience.
Verification by the Bank
- The bank verifies the identity of the guardian and the minor (if applicable).
- The account’s balance and transaction history are reviewed.
- All pending dues, charges, or documentation issues must be resolved.
- The bank may require a declaration that no further transactions will be made.
- In case of legal guardianship, relevant court documents may be requested.
Withdrawal of Remaining Balance
- The account balance must be fully withdrawn by the guardian.
- Withdrawal can be made via cash, cheque, or account transfer.
- If linked to fixed or recurring deposits, those must be closed separately.
- The guardian must collect any pending interest or incentives.
- Banks may ask for acknowledgement of fund receipt.
Submission of Documents and Materials
- Return of ATM/debit card, cheque book, and passbook is mandatory.
- These items must be cancelled or surrendered during closure.
- A final account statement may be provided for recordkeeping.
- The bank updates its system to mark the account as closed.
- A closure confirmation receipt is issued to the guardian.
Special Case: Conversion at Majority
- If the minor has turned 18, the account can either be closed or converted.
- In case of closure, the now-major individual must submit closure request directly.
- All balances and features are settled as per standard adult account procedures.
- Closure must follow due KYC verification and documentation.
- Banks may require updated ID and address proof of the now-major account holder.
